Can I ride the MTR in Hong Kong while intoxicated?

Will I be fined for putting my feet on the seats in an MTR train carriage?

Yes. Placing or resting your feet on station property or train seats can incur a fine of up to HK$2,000. The regulation aims to maintain cleanliness and public hygiene in the carriages.

Is it legal to loiter in MTR stations or trains?

It is illegal. Loitering within railway premises without lawful authority or excuse is liable to a fine not exceeding HK$2,000.

Can loud music be played on the MTR?

No. Unauthorised noise emission can result in a fine of up to HK$2,000. This includes excessive volume from playing music, videos, or games using a loudspeaker.

Can you be fined for not following MTR escalator instructions?

Yes. Unintentionally, failing to follow instructions, or travelling in the reverse direction on an escalator may result in a fine of HK$2,000.

Are you allowed to eat or drink within the MTR paid areas?

No. Eating or drinking in paid areas or on trains can result in a fine of up to HK$2,000. This includes all food and beverages (including plain water).

What happens if you use vulgar language within MTR premises?

Offence under the Mass Transit Railway Ordinance. The use of blasphemous or indecent language is subject to prosecution and penalty.

What are the penalties for crossing MTR gates or fare evasion?

Can promotional leaflets be distributed on buses?

No. Distributing advertisements or promotional materials on franchised buses without the company's authorization is illegal.

What happens if loud music or videos are played on a public bus?

The bus captain has the right to request passengers to alight. Those who refuse to cooperate may be handed over to the police.

What is the fine for a pedestrian crossing the road against a traffic light?

A fixed penalty of HK$2,000 applies. Crossing the road on a "red man" signal or not using designated pedestrian crossings is an offence.

Is cycling on the pavement allowed?

No. Riding a bicycle on a pavement is illegal, except on designated cycle tracks.

Can electric scooters be used on Hong Kong roads or pavements?

No. Riding electric scooters or electric unicycles is considered driving an unregistered and unlicensed vehicle, which is illegal.
